As more senior citizens of the baby boomer generation choose to stay in their homes as they age, the demand for in-home care has gone up. A recent survey by the Assisting Hands National Office confirms that people are more willing to age in place and they see professional home care services as their best option for care.
The following is a brief summery of the findings of the Home Care Survey from the Assisting Hands National Office.
People Surveyed
This survey asked questions related to home care to adults between the ages of 55 and 75 with an annual income above $150,000. There were 891 total responses.
Need for Home Care
When asked if they know someone who has or currently does need home care, 77.78% of respondents said yes. This percentage is inversed when respondents were asked if they have ever or currently need help with daily living as 77.78% said no.
Finding Home Care
The respondents were asked where they would go to find a home care service provider if they or a loved one needed care and to rank their options. The first thing most respondents would do is ask a friend which was the first choice of 66.67% of respondents. The second most popular option was to ask a healthcare professional which was chosen by 55.56% of respondents. Search the internet was the last resort as 66.67% put that as their third option.
All of the respondents affirmed that they think home care is a better option than a facility like a nursing home, which is not surprising considering that the Coronavirus has deeply affected the senior population living in care facilities.
The respondents were then given a number of possible answers when asked what they would consider important before choosing in-home caregivers and to check all that apply. The results are as follows:
- Recommendation from someone you know: 100%
- Compassionate caregivers: 88.89%
- Company that has been in business for more than a few years: 88.89%
- Dependable caregivers: 77.78%
- Recommendation from a health care professional: 66.67%
- Company that is bonded and insured: 66.67%
- Good reviews on the internet: 55.56%
When asked how they would decide on a home care agency without a referral by someone they know or a medical professional, 88.89% said they would visit the professional’s website while 66.67% of respondents would search the internet for reviews or call the home care agency to ask questions.
