arthritis that don’t mean you have to just let her fumble on her own.

Know When to Help

Caring for a loved one who has arthritis can be tricky. Most people with arthritis have good days and bad days. Some are also extremely sensitive about receiving help, particularly if they’ve been very independent throughout their life. The best way to be able to know when to offer help is to open the lines of communication. Let your loved one know that you’re trying to be alert to the fact that she doesn’t always need or want your help, but that you need to know when help is likely to be accepted. Sometimes family members work out a code word or a nonverbal cue that lets caregivers know when help would be appreciated. For some, that can be easier than actually saying, “I need help.”

Don’t Try to Do it All

Another problem could simply be that your loved one isn’t happy about having you helping her. She may accept help readily from others, but give you a hard time when you try to help. This is a perfect situation in which to enlist the help of qualified elder care providers. They have experience in helping people with arthritis and other health conditions and they can make sure that your loved one is getting the exact help that she needs when she needs it. The best part about this is that there’s no guessing on your part and you’re removed from the equation so that you can focus on other forms of caregiving for your loved one.

Big Changes Can Mean Problems

Regardless of how involved your loved one allows you to be with her care in terms of her arthritis, it’s essential to know and understand when to contact her doctor. If she suddenly has severe pain in her joint or experiences unusual swelling, there’s reason to alert her medical team. Extreme heat in the joint or redness in the area that isn’t usually there is also cause for concern.

Offering your loved one the type of help that she will accept with her arthritis is a fine line to walk, but it’s worth it to make sure that she has the help that she needs.
