How to Start Getting More Sleep as a Family Caregiver

January 26, 2017Blogs by Assisting Hands Home Care Palm Beach, Elderly Care in Boynton Beach FLmramirez

Elderly Care in Boynton Beach FL

Elderly Care in Boynton Beach FLSleep can be elusive for family caregivers for a variety of reasons. If you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re likely to find that many areas of your life suffer. Correcting that problem needs to be high on your to do list.

Make Sure There’s No Medical Cause

Talk to your doctor about the problems that you’re having with getting enough sleep. There may be a medical reason that you’re having difficulty and he can help you to figure out a resolution. You might need to change your diet or your exercise habits and your doctor can help you to work out the optimal changes for your situation.

Learn How to Incorporate Relaxation Exercises

For some family caregivers, worry and thinking too much at bedtime can be a thief of sleep. If that is the case for you, then relaxation exercises can help you to clear your mind before you try to sleep. You might try stretching, yoga, breathing exercises, or even meditation. A combination of several of these may be just the right combination for you.

Add Naps, if Possible

Sometimes you really can’t help but get up too early and go to bed too late. One solution that you might find helpful is to take a nap during the middle of the day. This can work especially well if your elderly loved one also takes a nap or is busy with some other task, such as a physical therapist who comes to the house. You want to be careful not to take naps that are too long, however, since that can make the situation worse.

Hire an Elder Care Provider

In some situations, you aren’t able to sleep simply because your elderly loved one isn’t able to sleep. Her circadian rhythm might be off or she may have other issues contributing to the problem. You can only go so long trying to manage both all day and all night, so another option is to hire elder care providers to be there for your loved one at night so you can sleep and take over in the morning.

If you’re still not getting enough sleep, try to figure out where the problem lies so that you can focus on a solution that works for you.
