Adult day care centers offer a dual solution. Open during daytime hours, adult day care programs help family caregivers who need a respite from caregiving responsibilities. Caregivers have peace of mind that their loved one is in good hands while they are involved with work, taking care of other responsibilities or just taking a break from caregiving while the senior is in a safe supportive environment for older adults who need assistance. The participant receives essential health care and mental/social stimulation through the center’s organized activities.

Adult day care centers promote well-being and quality of life by providing social and health related services. Some programs have a specialized Alzheimer’s license and provide specialized programming in a secure environment. Day programs also offer nutritious meals and snacks and can accommodate special diets.

Activities provided at adult day care centers may include:

Arts and crafts, live entertainment, parties, singing, trivia and word games, exercise, discussion and reminiscing, intergenerational programs, sensory programs, spiritual programs, lectures and educational programs.

Health Care provided at and adult day care center may include:

Medication administration, coordination with other health services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, podiatry and counseling, assistance with personal care  and feeding assistance in addition to supervision, observation and assistance from trained nurses and certified nursing assistance.

Additional services provided by some centers include transportation, support groups for caregivers and health screenings.

Adult day care is appropriate for seniors who are alone during the day while family members are at work or taking care of other responsibilities, need companionship, social stimulation and functional assistance, are physically or cognitively challenged and/or cannot be safely left alone at home.
