Seniors deserve their own week and Active Aging Week gives them the boost they need to continue taking advantage of all life has to offer—no matter what their age or ability level. Celebrate Active Aging Week every October with other older adults as well as friends and family.
Active Aging Week began in 2003 as an initiative of The International Council on Active Aging. These seven days are intended to bring light to the positive processes of growing older. Adults aged 50 and over are encouraged to move their bodies and participate in wellness activities.
This year, Active Aging Week is held from October 2-8. Seniors and their friends and families who spread the word about this special celebration allow more people—young and old—to get involved and personally witness or experience the benefits aging brings.
How does Active Aging week promote physical health?
As the name of this celebratory week suggests, Active Aging Week asks older adults to move their bodies and experience the joy and health of physical fitness. Seniors of every ability level and place of residence are encouraged to join an exercise program or walk with a caregiver.
Active Aging Week is a celebration of physical health. Even seniors residing in assisted living communities or who live with mobility issues can become involved. This week is dedicated to getting all seniors up and moving. There are physical activities for everyone.
In Florida, seven days of activities focused on wellness are scheduled: A group painting class kicks off the week, followed by a healthy cooking demonstration, memory and aging lecture, and health fair. The week ends with golf. Seniors have the incentive to start a healthy lifestyle.
Active Aging Week holds its fifteenth annual Walk! With Aegis Therapies. The event is held across the country, allowing countless individuals to participate. Thirty-minute physical activity options are delivered virtually, so that seniors in all locations and ability levels can participate.
Active Aging week hosts a variety of activities that seniors enjoy. Included are group walks and group exercises with the beneficial social component, golf games for the avid golfer, tennis, yoga, and Pilates classes. Aerobics classes and fall prevention tactics are also offered.
How does Active Aging week promote nutrition?
Physical health and nutrition are closely linked, and Active Aging Week helps seniors unleash the power of eating a balanced diet to benefit active aging. A healthy diet fuels the body; it also boosts endurance, protects muscles, bones, and tissue, and reduces the risk of injury.
It’s essential that older adults consume sufficient vitamins and minerals to accelerate recovery from an illness, injury, or wound. During Active Aging Week, senior participants receive information that can help them make informed dietary choices in the present and future.
Seniors also learn the importance of hydration throughout the year. This week emphasizes the benefits of drinking a glass of water upon waking up, prior to every meal, and before going to bed. Eat fruits and vegetables, like watermelon and cucumbers, that are high in water content.
How does Active Aging week promote holistic health?
Active Aging Week launches with a healthy breakfast. Seniors are welcome to attend health fairs, where offerings include blood pressure and blood glucose testing, chair yoga, gardening, immunizations as well as health and travel presentations. Older adults leave with greater health education.
The social aspect cannot be overemphasized. Friendly competitions, such as bean bag tosses, bring retirement community residents together. Also featured are mindfulness workshops and craft fairs highlighting the creativity of residents. The older adult community spirit shines during these seven days.
Active Aging Week is an influential global movement. The main goal of this initiative is to promote healthy activities for aging adults, so it’s no surprise that the events have been shown to increase the participation levels of older people in health clubs, even attracting new aging members.
Balloon rides, bowling tournaments, Jeopardy, walking relays, table tennis, and pool keep seniors engaged, active, and full of health. Seniors who celebrate Active Aging Week experience loads of fun, revel in the camaraderie of other older adults and feel the joy of being active.
A sense of community gives aging participants the motivation to continue working toward a common goal: wellness. Active Aging Week brings seniors and communities together. There is no better way to accomplish a goal than to have the support of and accountability from others.
When Active Aging Week rolls around this October, the senior in your life will benefit from participating in the physical and social activities. During the rest of the year, older adults can focus on improving their wellness with companion care from Assisting Hands Home Care.
Elder care is designed to fulfill the daily non-medical care needs of aging adults. Professional caregivers are responsible for providing assistance with personal hygiene tasks, preparing nutritious meals, shopping for fresh groceries, performing light housekeeping, and providing timely medication reminders.
Safe transportation is provided to areas within the communities in Palm Beach County. We drive seniors to doctors’ appointments, libraries, or grocery shopping. Companion care also includes socialization to support social and emotional health; caregivers hold conversations, play card games, and take seniors on outings.
We encourage physical activity in our care recipients by encouraging and scheduling exercise or simply accompanying them on walks around the neighborhood. Older adults are fully supported by caregivers so that they feel confident and comfortable while taking walks or engaging in other forms of exercise.
Assisting Hand Home Care’s holistic approach promotes the physical, emotional, and social well-being of the seniors we are privileged to serve. We support the elderly in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Jupiter, North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Royal Palm Beach, Wellington, FL and the communities.
