4 Complications You Might Experience from Caregiver Stress

Home Care in Lake Park FL

Home Care in Lake Park FLAs if caregiver stress weren’t frustrating enough to deal with, it can bring along with it some complications that are just as annoying. Being on the lookout for these complications can help you to beat them before they get a foothold in your life.

Your Health Might Suffer

When you’re stressed, you might not make the same choices about food and exercise that you might ordinarily make. You might turn to comfort foods more often, for example, or you might not feel like taking your normal evening walk. Give yourself a few too many of those days, and you might find that your immune system is suffering and you’re experiencing smaller illnesses more often. You might even gain weight, experience high blood pressure, or have other health issues crop up.

You Might Experience More Aches and Pains than Usual

Some people with severe, chronic stress find that they have headaches more often. You might also experience muscle cramping, back strain if you’re having to lift your loved one, or simply soreness from not exercising as much as you used to. If you’re neglecting your own health and avoiding your own doctor’s appointments, you may also be overlooking clues to bigger health problems.

You Might Become Depressed

Being a family caregiver is emotionally heavy work. You care about your elderly loved one, but you’re often left alone to deal with the situation. Your friends and other family members are likely busy with their own lives, so you may not get as much social interaction as you used to get. All of this can lead to depression or even just a feeling of overwhelming sadness.

You Might Lean on Harmful Crutches

Some family caregivers find themselves to be so stressed that they may lean on harmful crutches more often than they may have otherwise. Some examples of these kinds of crutches can be alcohol and cigarettes. Increasing your intake of these types of harmful crutches can make your stress worse and can cause you bigger problems in the long run. They’re also more difficult to kick when you’re ready to stop leaning on them quite so much.

If you find that you’re experiencing any of these complications, make sure to talk to your doctor or to a therapist or counselor. It’s also a good idea to look into hiring home care providers so that you can give yourself a little bit of a break.
