Senior Care in North Palm Beach FL
With the increasing popularity of e-readers, tablets, and even book apps on smartphones, it can be easy to ignore the classic paperback book. Because of this, July 30th has been dedicated as Paperback Book Day. Paperback Book Day is a wonderful day of seniors and their caregivers to get back in touch with reading traditional books. Reading can have great health benefits for seniors and caregivers alike as it promotes learning, decreases stress, and it is an activity that many find relaxing and enjoyable. Read on for some fun tips for celebrating Paperback Book Day this year.
Visit the Library
One of the best places seniors and their caregivers can go for a wide selection of books is the public library. Spend a day staying out of the sun and heat by visiting the public library. Browse the titles, make a few selections, and spend the day reading and being immersed in a great story. Be sure to take some books home, too, to enjoy reading all month long!
Unplug for the Day
On Paperback Book Day, vow to skip reading on tablets, e-readers, and other devices and do all reading with traditional books. This will give yours and your senior loved one’s eyes a much needed “break” and it will promote relaxation. Reading a traditional book is virtually free from distraction unlike reading on a tablet which can be interrupted by receiving emails and other distracting notifications. Reading on a tablet or e-reader is convenient and eco-friendly, but it is always nice to enjoy the feel of a paperback book from time to time.
Trade a Book
If you or your senior loved one has a friend who also loved to read, consider doing a book trade. This way you can share the books that you love and have great conversations about them. Maybe you and your loved one will enjoy trading books together and talking about your thoughts on the story, the writing, and the overall message of the book.
Try a New Genre
If your loved one typically gravitates toward a certain type of book, suggest that they expand their horizons by reading a book in a different genre. If they usually enjoy mystery novels, suggest a book of poems or even a nonfiction book. Or, if they usually read nonfiction, encourage them to read an exciting thriller or romance novel. They just may discover their new favorite genre this way!
