Home Care Services in Boynton Beach FLDoes your aging parent seem to have trouble falling or staying asleep? If you answered yes, they could be suffering from insomnia, but they are not alone. This is a sleep problem that many seniors throughout the United States are struggling with. By not getting the correct treatment for their condition, you may begin to notice a change in their behavior, diet, and mood.

If your loved one lives alone and you are unable to visit as frequently as you would like, the elder’s insomnia may go unnoticed. By hiring an elderly care provider, there will be someone there to watch for unusual symptoms that may indicate they are suffering from insomnia.

Why does your loved one have insomnia?

The reason your parent may have developed this sleep problem is different for everyone. But there are a few common things older adults do (or do not do) that could make it challenging for them to get plenty of rest at night.

Here are some possible reasons for insomnia.

  • Spending too much time inside. By going for walks outside, the elder will be getting plenty of natural sunlight. This is needed because studies have found that the more time your loved one spends in nature, the better they will sleep at night.
  • Lack of routine. Having a daily routine will let the body know when it is supposed to wake up and go to sleep. This routine should include things like meal times and activities the elder usually participates in during the day. An elderly care provider can help your loved one come up with a routine that will help get the senior’s biological clock in sync.
  • Not eating enough fiber. Loading up on fiber and eating less saturated fats and sugar has been shown through various studies to help older adults sleep better at night. This is because fiber allows the senior to spend more time in restorative short-wave sleep instead of frequently waking up in the middle of the night.
  • No physical activities. Many elderly adults refuse to participate in workouts because their chronic health problems cause them pain, they have mobility issues, or are lacking energy. Whatever their reason, exercise can actually reduce their aches and pains and give them an energy boost. It is important that they do not exercise too close to bedtime as it could disrupt their sleep.

If your loved one is still having trouble sleeping, encourage them to talk to their doctor. They may be able to get a prescription for sleep medication that will help them sleep well at night.
